Nigeria: Nac Trains Auto Workers On Skills to Handle New Auto Technologies.

The National Automotive Council (NAC) has in collaboration with the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and SURE-P provided a 3-week training programme for auto workers in Nigeria to enable them to repair modern generation vehicles.
According to the Director General of NAC, Engr. Aminu Jalal, about 1002 auto technicians drawn from the 36 states and the FCT participated in the programme.

He noted that about 1004 technicians were also trained last year in similar exercise which was aimed at equipping auto technicians in the country with the necessary skills to repair modern generation vehicles to retain their jobs, which he said was in line with the newly approved National Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP).

He also noted that technology in the auto sector advances continually and at a very fast pace, explaining that most cars on the roads today are built with a lot of electronically controlled systems, saying the only way to meet up with this advancement is training and re-training, which is one of the main aims of the National Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP).
He said the National Automotive Council (NAC) had conducted a skill gap analysis of mechanics in Nigeria some years ago, which he said entails the knowledge of Nigerian mechanics and the basic needs for vehicle repairs.

"Unfortunately, it was observed that a lot of Nigerian mechanics lacked the skills/or equipment to properly maintain modern vehicles. As a result of this, NAC began various training programmes for auto workers from 2006 to date and this training programme that is rounding up today is one of the numerous programmes embarked upon by the Council. The Council, in collaboration with SURE-P and SMEDAN, put in serious efforts to making this training a success. NAC provided the trainers, training manuals, books and other logistics support, SMEDAN provided entrepreneurship training while Sure-P financed the whole programme including the empowerment tools to be given to participants and their allowances," he explained, commending the partners for making the training a success.
