The shocking news of the passing away of Carey Eaton crowed in the early hours of Thursday morning in most parts of Africa, after an armed robbery incident at a friend’s home in Nairobi in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Eaton, until his untimely death, was the co-founder of One Africa Media — one of Africa’s largest classifieds group which owns and operates Cheki, BrighterMonday, BuyRentKenya, Jobberman, Private Property, SafariNow and StayNow — a company he founded alongside Justin Clarke.
In a statement by the company, Eaton was described as “intelligent and bold but wielded this gift with a humility that gave all around him the confidence to achieve more than they knew was possible.”
As one of the inspirational leaders in the African technology industry, his impact in the space was remarkable, even as he also played a mentorship role to technology entrepreneurs.
One of the entrepreneurs that he impacted positively on was Jason Njoku, the co-founder of startup builder, SPARK.NG
“I spoke with Carey a few weeks ago. Whenever we spoke he fundamentally adjusted my perception of what technology in Africa could achieve. He was a true legend. His passion, enthusiasm and reputation at pioneering technology in Africa speaks for itself. Today is truly truly sad day”, said Njoku in a tribute to Eaton.
From humble beginnings, Eaton started Cheki in 2011 and grew it into Kenya’s number one car portal and the larger group of companies into Africa’s largest classified group. Before then, he was CIO for Australian classified group, SEEK.
While he’s resting from his work now, we hope that his legacy would not be taken away from the team and the brands that he built.
