Two ex-internationals, on Saturday charged the Golden Eaglets to approach the second round of the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile with all seriousness despite losing their last group match.
The two ex-players, Bright Omokaro and Etim Esin, gave the advice in separate telephone interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
They urged the defending champion not allow the loss deter their focus in their next matches.
NAN reports that Nigeria lost its last group match 1-2 to Croatia, but had advanced to the round of 16, having won its first two group matches 2-0 against the U.S and 5-1 against hosts Chile.
Omokaro, a former Super Eagles player, urged the Eaglets to reconsolidate in the next stage and do everything humanly possible to retain the cup.
“Football is a round object that rolls around and our players must take cognisance of that and change their strategy in the second around.
“An average Nigerian is interested in winning and nothing less than that. The boys should write their names in gold by winning their way to the final stage,’’ Omokaro said.
Also, Etim Esin who described the players as being in top form , added that they possessed the qualities required to get to the final stage of the competition.
He urged them not to play under pressure which he said could destabilise them at the event.
“The fact that we are the defending champion does not mean we should win the tournament by all means.
“The team is solid and skilful, so they should not play under any form of pressure in the second round,’’ he said.
Also speaking, a grassroots coach in Ajegunle, Jide Gabriel, told NAN that he was confident that the team would cruise passed the second round.
Gabriel said that the boys should continue to play according to the instruction of their coach, adding that they would triumph at the end.
