Nigeria Must Dump Oil
The only sure way to get Nigeria back on track economically is to direct attention to the production of natural gas.

This was the submission of Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (Rtd) while speaking on Thursday at the 13th Daily Trust Dialogue in Abuja.

He posited: "We have huge quantity of natural gas -about 187Trillion Cubit Feet of proved reserve. Natural gas is the feedstock for ammonia and ammonia is the major raw material for fertilizer.

"That means we should consider building more fertilizer plants to boost our agric sector. With our current abundant cocoa, we can be a major producer and exporter of high quality chocolate; with our abundant cassava, we can be a major producer and exporter of starch and glycol; with our abundant fruits like mangoes, oranges, pineapples, we can be a major producer and exporter of fruit juices. The list is just endless."

He stressed that the same natural gas is what "our GENCOS (generating companies) require to generate electricity because most of the electricity power plants across the country are gas driven.

"With enough gas supplies and implementation of the Nigerian Gas Master Plan (NGMP), enough electricity can be generated and the distribution companies (DISCO) will have enough to distribute subject to appropriate pricing mechanism and necessary government fiscal regimes and support.

"Once Nigeria moves away from epileptic power supply, nearly all the economic and productive sectors would be boosted back to life."
