Choosing a Business and Making it Grow
Choosing a Business
Some of us have our business(es) already while many more intend to start one. Some are ready to take the plunge while many are weighing their options as well as the risk on leaving their current pursuit for the rough Afripreneurial terrain we have in Nigeria & Africa as a whole. I agree that we have challenges in Nigeria & Africa, but everyday, the chances for success some how, some way increases while the market share may be reducing.
There are thing we need to know before we move fully into our businesses. Its very important that we think about it and know that skills matters a lot. In cases where the business requires multiple skills, please settle for a partner, learn the ropes, pay someone or outsource. Another thing is the life-style of an Afripreneur is not that of a celebrity most especially when you are in the growth phase. We also need to understand proper financial management. Above all in Nigeria, please know the rules so that some people will not use your business for breakfast, lunch and supper.
No one is going to argue that the operations and clients/customers are not essential for business success. I personally belief they are the lifeblood of any business. Concentrating on those two will only make our businesses exist but if our business is to grow to a world-class level, PR and marketing becomes essential. We should just find a way to ensure we are out there.
Not doing the aforementioned has stagnated and killed many businesses. We are faced with situations where a business is doing fine and suddenly after sometime, it starts crumbling. The reason is not far-fetched. A proverb in my tribe says "a stream that forgets its source will surely get dry." If you have forgotten the things you did in getting the customers you have today, you're surely joking with exiting the Spartan business arena of the Afripreneurs.
