The Eagles ended their title campaign at the championship courtesy of Ghana’s 4-1 win in the penalty shootout after full and extra time score remained goalless in Wednesday’s semifinal duel at the Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein.
Eguavoen said any football challenge between the two West African foes at any cadre is an encounter that the outcome could go either way.
“Of course not, the Super Eagles were not disgraced rather lost gallantly. We had chances to end the game within the regulation time but failed to tuck the ball into the opponents net.
“Penalty shootouts could go either way, Ghana and Nigeria at whatever level of challenge are bitter rivals with the result often going to the side that pushed the hardest.
“I’m proud of the boys, they played very well and acquitted themselves handsomely in the championship,” said the former Nigerian defender to supersport.com.
Eguavoen said the likes of Enugu Rangers’ winger, Ejike Uzoenyi, Solomon Kwambe, Abdullahi Shehu, among others stood out as World Cup materials in the championship.
“We’re blessed with talents but Keshi should be allowed to focus on his plans for the World Cup.
“Enugu Rangers’ Ejike Uzoenyi, Kano Pillars’ Abdullahi Shehu and Sunshine Stars’ Solomon Kwambe can successful challenge Efe Ambrose for a spot but the wind at the higher level could blow differently, so we should support Keshi for whatever decision he makes as regard his World Cup squad,” said the former City Of David (COD) United coach.
Eguavoen however will want the Eagles to go all out to win the losers game against the Warriors of Zimbabwe on Saturday.
“Of course, we need the losers game, we can’t afford to lay back and allow Zimbabweans to ride over us, we must strive to take something home,” Eguavoen said.
Nigeria will confront Zimbabwe in the losers game on Saturday at the Cape Town Stadium same ground Ghana will face Libya in the final.
